Larry Argue

ARGUE, Larry Passed away peacefully at his home in Guelph, Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at the age of 78. Larry will be deeply missed by his wife, Bette. Survived by Alison, Joeann, Vicki and Kim, many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends. Larry was a well travelled structural and Agricultural Engineer who started his career in the 1950's. He was a graduate of the University of Guelph where he also taught. Larry was a truly kind, caring and genuine person who touched the lives of many. He was an extraordinary individual who will be fondly missed. Details will follow for the memorial service in the spring. A tree will be planted in his honour at the Arboretum. Donations may be made in Larry's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association

BOGOSLOWSKI, Anthony Steven - Suddenly,onThursday April 18th, 2013 as the result of a motor vehicle collision, Tony Bogoslowski in his 81st year. Beloved husband of the late Eva (Filman) Bogoslowski (2002). Loving father of Myrna Fisk and her husband Jim of London, K. Eric Bogoslowski and his wife Sandra of Calgary, Alta. and grandfather of Kara and Adam Fisk and Ward Bogoslowski. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary Bogoslowski, sister Helen Lukie, brothers Casey and John. Survived by his brothers Alexander, Michael and Peter and sisters Jean Urbanowicz and Olga Weiczorek. Tony taught for many years with the London Board of Education. Science and nature were his passions. He filled his retirement with travel, puttering in his garden, supporting his neighbours and volunteering for Meals on Wheels, an activity he shared for many years with Kara. His quiet support and ready help will be sorely missed.

LEUTY, STANLEY JOSIAH “SI” Stan was born March 7, 1934, in Weston, Ontario, a son of the late James Henry Stanley and Nellie Evangeline (née Flatt) Leuty. Stan died unexpectedly and suddenly at his home in Meaford on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the age of 77. Stan will be remembered as the deeply loving and devoted husband of Myrna Jean (née Risebrough) who predeceased him in June 2011. Stan is remembered also as a loved Dad by his children Todd (Isabelle), Jennifer (Jack), and Michael (Natalie) and as a sadly missed Grandpa by his grandchildren: Michelle (Ryan), Daryl, Lindsay, Robyn, Nina, Claire, Scott, Aaron, and Emma. Stan was predeceased also by an infant son Peter in 1969, son Kirk in 1990 and by sisters Joy and Pat. He is also survived by his two sisters Mary (Don), and Johanna and will be fondly remembered by Barbara and Jim Beardsall. Funeral services will be conducted at Meaford United Church, (corner of Sykes and Boucher St.) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. with interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery. MILLER, James Rysdale - it is with sadness that we announce the passing of James Rysdale Miller in his 82nd year, on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in St. Thomas, ON. Much loved by his wife Mary (Magee) Miller, his daughter Susan Hardman, (Steve), his son David (Sarah) and grandchildren Jessica (Tim), Martha, Rachel and Thomas. Survived by his sister Mary Ann Allison of Niagara Falls. Jim was a graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, ON and worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, St. Thomas until his retirement. He was a proud volunteer with the St. Thomas Committee of Adjustment, the Christmas Shoppe and the Caring Cupboard. Visitation will be held at WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME 45 Elgin St. Thomas on Friday, October 30th from 7-9 p.m. and at Knox Presbyterian Church, 55 Hincks St., St. Thomas, ON. on Saturday, October 31st from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. the time of the funeral service. Receiives AIC Fellowship Award 1992

E.C. (Sam) Lougheed, P.Ag., was born in Thornbury, Ontario and received his BSc and MSA from the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph. He received his PhD from Michigan State University, supported by an Agricultural Institute of Canada scholarship. 

Lougheed has spent his entire teaching career in the Department of
Horticultural Science at the University of Guelph. In addition to a heavy teaching load, he has continued his research on the postharvest physiology of fruits and vegetables especially with relation to controlled atmosphere storage and has become internationally known in the field. In 1989, he became only the fifth Canadian to be named a Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science.

Lougheed has been extensively involved with the Scientific Journals of the AIC and has served as Editor of the Canadian Journal of Plant Science and as Chairman of the Editorial Policy Board for the Canadian Journals of Plant, Soil and Animal Science.

Lougbeed has also been involved in international development and has worked on projects in India, Thailand and is currently consulting on a CrDA-sponsored project in Argentina.

Passed away at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Guelph on Friday, August 14, 2009. Everett Charles ''Sam'' Lougheed at the age of 82 years. Beloved husband and best friend for over 50 years of Leslie (nee Burness). Proud father of Stephen (Anne), Katherine (Alan Banks) and Robert. Cherished Grandpa of David, Evelyn, Danielle, Amanda and John. Dear brother of Margaret Ulch (the late Alec),Clinton (Rosemarie), Frank (Helen) and the late Ethel and George. He's done it again!

"On Sunday Oct 12, 2014, I ran the Victoria 1/2 marathon in 2 hours & 24
minutes, considerably slower than last year's 2 hours 7 minutes, placing 6th vs 3rd last year."
He seemed to be disappointed, but after all, who among us would even consider entering such an event. Well done Owen.

Owen will be in Walldorf, Germany, a small town near Heidelberg, from Nov. 7, to Dec. 18, on an assignment for Hewlett Packard’s Enterprise Division, which has been asked by AGS, a women’s clothing firm, to manage their  Mail Order Processing System (MOPS) which operates similarly to Amazon.
He intends to be in Toronto, Dec. 19^th, to celebrate Christmas, with his two sons and their families, and then on Dec. 28^th off  to Vancouver to celebrate the New Year with family and friends. 


Owen, has for several years been competing in “Half Marathon” races.
This year, running in the Victoria Half Marathon, he completed the race in a time of 2:07,
Third, only slightly, behind the First place finisher, in his age group, at 1:58. Well done Owen!

Allan recently wrote the following notification to "Hum". "Year ‘58 is experiencing sad news of late. I have lost my dear wife Linda to pancreatic cancer April 16, 2012. Some classmates will remember meeting her at reunions. I suggest sending a brief notice out to announce her passing." Linda was born in Ottawa on May 14, 1941. She attended Lisgar and Nepean high schools and made Ottawa her lifelong home. Linda was a graduate of Acadia University, completed a dietetic internship in Vancouver General Hospital and worked in Montreal, Ottawa and England. She worked at Agriculture Canada for Food Advisory Services until 1974. Linda was a long-time member of Ottawa Home Economics Association, and former volunteer for Ottawa Meals-on-Wheels. Devoted, patient and caring wife and mother, she will be remembered most for the way that she lived, with grace, compassion, integrity and love. Linda was a loyal friend to many people, who valued her abilities as a good listener and caring, thoughtful ways. A Note from Hum:

Dick DeJoing sent me a letter dated July 19, 2010, which ended up in a dead-letter box and which I received today (Feb. 24, 2011).

The news that Dick wanted to share, was that his wife , Maryl, passed away on Aug. 8, 2009, from cancer, having been a BC survivor for 10 years. As Dick says, "Cruelly, his mother-in-law was killed in a car accident exactly one week later at the age of 92."

In a phone conversation today, Dick is carrying on as best he can.

Passed away December 16 in Southlake Hospital in Newmarket, Ontario of complications arising from chronic leukemia. He was 76. Born in the Netherlands, Gordon emigrated to Canada at age 20 and, notwithstanding the fact that his English was rudimentary, he enrolled in the Ontario Agricultural College (now the University of Guelph), and with encouragement from his brother and sister, and by working during summers he graduated from a program in horticulture in 1958. He became superintendent at London Highlands Country Club. Three years later he moved to Toronto to embark on a 12-year tenure as superintendent at the now defunct Northwood Golf Course. In 1973 he became superintendent at the 36-hole Toronto Board of Trade Country Club, which he expanded to 45 holes a few years later. He was active with the Ontario Suprintendents Association and helped found the Canadian Golf Course Superintendents Association. He also served as a director of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and on its historical preservation committee. A frequent contributor to industry publications, he received awards and accolades for his writings, initiated The Greenmaster magazine and served as its editor for five years. Gordon co-authored a book titled Practical Golf Course Maintenance which is in its second printing, has been translated into Spanish, and serves as a textbook for several college golf course maintenance programs. A seminar based on the book, The Magic of Greenkeeping, has been presented all over North and South America and beyond He also wrote two books on golf course management history, as well as family history books. He tried his hand at golf course architecture and designed several successful courses still in operation today. Upon retiring from the Board of Trade in 199, Gordon, with his brother Harry, re-opened a dormant 9-hole golf course (Pleasant View Golf Course)which he had laid out years before near Brantford and owned/operated it until its sale in 2008. One of the founders of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association has passed away.

Gordon Witteveen was 76.

Mr. Witteveen was born in the Netherlands and came to Canada in 1954 at the age of 20, where he attended the Ontario Agricultural College and earned a science degree in 1958. During summer vacations, he worked at the Noranda Mines Golf Club in western Quebec and became superintendent of the London Highland Golf Club in Ontario, where he stayed for three years before moving to Northwood Country Club near Toronto. It was during his time at Northwood that Witteveen became involved in the founding of the CGSA and GreenMaster Magazine. In 1973, he moved to the Board of Trade Country Club in Woodbridge, Ont., before designing an additional nine-hole short course there. In 1999, he retired and operated the nine-hole Pleasant View Golf Course near Brantford, Ont., until 2008.

A donation will be made in Gordon's memory to the CGSA Scholar's Fund, which is used to support future turf professionals in completing their studies. A private funeral is be held in Toronto, with a memorial service planned for after the holidays at the Board of Trade Country Club in Woodbridge.
