Beverley Gloin

Beverley Granville Gloin, loved husband of Margie (McGregor) Gloin passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 19, 2022. He will be missed by their children Greg(Jen Max) Gloin of Linwood and Kathy( Ken Bell) of St. Thomas. His grandchildren Kirsty(Sean), Riley( Chloe), Jake(Nikki), Leah(Ryan) and Brody(Addie) will remember all the fun times with Gramps planting the garden, driving the tractor, going for hikes, playing cards, playing Hook, and listening to the stories as part of a bedtime ritual. They learned much about nature from him. Bev and Margie enjoyed watching first their children and then the grandkids as they competed in various sports activities. Bev was predeceased by his parents Bertha(Copeland) and Granville Gloin and his brother and sister-in-law Don and Anne Gloin. He is survived by his niece Connie(Howard) Day and nephew Ken(Chele) Gloin. Also survived by his sisters-in-law Liz(Bill) van Zanden, Bonnie(Paul) Tait and his brother-in-law Jim(Catherine) McGregor and their families.

Bev was raised on the family farm, Talbot St. E, St. Thomas. Upon graduation from STCI, Bev attended OAC Guelph where he made many long-time friends and graduated with his Bachelor of Agriculture Science in 1958. Bev and Margie were married that summer and spent a year in Toronto as Bev completed his Degree in Mechanical Engineering at U of T. They settled back in St. Thomas in 1959. Bev spent 30 years at Fanshawe College, teaching for a couple of years and then working in the Physical Plant Department. After several years as Physical Plant Director, he retired in 1994.

A new chapter began with Bev carefully planning many vacations. Somehow they usually managed to include steam train journeys. Through the years he particularly enjoyed planning and completing the many building renovations to their home. Bev was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church and active on the Board of Managers, Men’s Brotherhood and Foodgrains Committee. He also enjoyed the friendships he made as a member of the Golden K and The Order of Good Cheer. Bev was a gentleman and a gentle man now off on his final journey. The funeral will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 55 Hinks Street, St. Thomas on Monday, May 23 at 2:00 pm. Masks required. Memorial donations may be made to Knox Church, STEGH, the Hospice of Elgin or a charity of your choice. Flowers gratefully declined. Arrangements entrusted with the Kebbel Funeral Home. Agenda Items:

* 60^th Reunion, Guelph, June 2018. Charlie will reserve a block of rooms in a convenient hotel.

Class Dinner preferred to a Class Luncheon. In our undergraduate tradition, an innocent

prank would be appropriate. Any suggestions?

Class Crest: We proposed to present the Crest to the Dean on September 13. Word from Diana Blackmore in Dean’s office, Rene Van Acker was at a class reunion in Orillia on Sept. 13. She will reconfirm and maybe propose an alternate date. No action since.
In April 2017, there will be a Class Luncheon at the Elmhurst Inn
The UofG School of Engineering has established the Director’s Award of Distinction to honour esteemed graduates. Jim Wilcox is initiating a nomination of Larry Argue. He will solicit endorsements from other OAC 58 Engineers.

News of Our West Coast Classmate Owen Townsend:

Keeping up to date with our Western Classmate:

Owen will be in Walldorf, Germany, a small town near Heidelberg, from Nov. 7, to Dec. 18, on an assignment for Hewlett Packard’s Enterprise Division, which has been asked by AGS, a women’s clothing firm, to manage their Mail Order Processing System (MOPS) which operates similarly to Amazon.
He intends to be in Toronto, Dec. 19^th, to celebrate Christmas, with his two sons and their families, and then on Dec. 28^th off to Vancouver to celebrate the New Year with family and friends.

Owen, has for several years been competing in “Half Marathon” races.
This year, running in the Victoria Half Marathon, he completed the race in a time of 2:07,
Third, only slightly, behind the First place finisher, in his age group, at 1:58. Well done Owen!

Owen also placed First in the BMO on May 5^th, completing the race in an identical time of 2:07.
He modestly says that the faster guys did not show up.

What a fabulous weekend it was in Victoria
- great fall weather, sunny & cool, great for the race
- wonderful race route, along the coast line
- starting & ending in the downtown core, near the hotel
- stayed at Harbour Towers, classy old hotel
- already planning to enter again next year.
