“Dear Class of OAC 1958. I am honoured to be one of the recipients of the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Thanks to your generous support I am the first in my family to pursue post-graduate studies. I have just begun my Ph.D program in the Department of Plant Agriculture, specializing in Plant Pathology. My future goal is to teach in a university or college, because I am very passionate about research, extension and education. I completed my BSc and my MSc at the UofG (Class of 2012 & 2017), as an OAC Alum, it means a great deal to me to have your support. My educational pursuits would not be possible without the generous support of sponsorships such as this one. Thank you so much for this opportunity. Sincerely, Sara Stricker (BSc. B.Ed. MSc. PhD student)”

Sixth Scholar Carolyn Dowling
Carolyn was a student presenter at the OMAF Agri-Food for Healthy Aging Research Days, and is an active volunteer for the campus engagement team which organizes lunches, community activities and charitable fundraisers for all employees, students and associates of the Vineland research station. Carolyn was a graduate student panel member for the OAC review committee, and is currently conducting outreach for Sustainable Food Systems and Alternative Economies through the Research Shop for the Institute for Community-Engaged Scholarship at the University of Guelph. She is also a dedicated volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Prevention Outreach Campaign. A very deserving recipient of the award indeed!
Yesterday the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (VRIC) opened its doors to welcome nearly 50 members of the Plant Ag Department to their historic orchards and research facilities.
Faculty, staff, grad students and families piled into a big yellow school bus and made their way down to the rolling fields and orchards of the Niagara area to take a look at the mysterious and elusive Vineland Research Station that is a part of the Department of Plant Agriculture.
At the Centre, which resides an hour and a half drive from Guelph's main campus, visitors got a glimpse of the inner workings and innovative new projects underway both in the lab, and in the field. Visitors were treated to peach, plum and apple orchard tours, informative talks on Vineland's history, business strategy and current research, and a picnic lunch outside on the picturesque grounds.
Located in Ontario's Niagara region, the Vineland Research Station was established in 1906 and is now partially affiliated with the University of Guelph. Jay Subramanian is the only faculty member residing at Vineland, however more than 150 researchers and scientists work for a number of affiliated partners including: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the University of Guelph.
Long-time technician at the station Glem Alm (left) shared his knowledge and spoke about the process of fruit tree breeding and selection.
The Centre aims to "deliver innovative product and production solutions that address the needs of the horticulture industry and advance Canada's research and commercialization agenda".
At the end of the day, visitors eagerly filled bags of peaches to take home and enjoy!
A big thanks to Vineland grad student Carolyn Dowling for organizing the event.

Meet your Class of OAC 58 Scholarship recipient, for 2012. His name is Michael Vanhie. He comes from a cash-crop farm on the outskirts of London. He is pursuing a Masters degree in Plant Agriculture, specifically Crop Protection. His lifelong ambition is to own and operate his own farm. His girlfriend, a charming young lady, about 5"2", took this picture. She is a nutritionist for Ontario Pork. His e-mail address is mvanhie@uoguelph.ca.
Hello to the class of OAC '58;
Thank-you for your support of the University of Guelph.
It was definitely a pleasure meeting Bill at the awards ceremony, this past Wednesday and it is unfortunate that I could not have met all of you. In my conversation with Bill, I enjoyed listening to the fun stories and memories of the OAC back in the day, and particularly liked the one about a fire truck and a trip down to the southern States. I will have you know that the university has not changed that much since you graduated. Although I doubt I will be spending the money on a fire truck, I am sure I would enjoy a trip down south with some University buddies. - Who knows, maybe we will end up in a sorority in Georgia. In the meantime your contributions will help me cover the costs of grad school and getting me that much closer to attaining my goal of operating my own farm. Again, I would like to sincerely thank each of you for your contributions to this school and hope that I will meet you some day to thank you in person. As a final note, my girlfriend, Andrea, wanted to defend herself and say that she is 5'5" and that it is only because I am so tall that it makes her look short. Enjoy these 6 weeks of weather until spring!
Sincerely, Michael Vanhie

Greetings from Peter Large
Peter Large P. Eng. E-Mailed the Following.
Charlie: Regrets, I will not be able to attend our 60th reunion but I will be thinking about you all and about our four years together at OAC so long ago. I haven't really been in touch with our Class since 1958 but briefly, I graduated from U of T Engineering in 1959, worked with a consulting engineering firm in Toronto for three years, then moved to Shell Canada Ltd where I stayed for 25 or so years during which I held a number of interesting jobs including Chief Engineer for Ontario for a three year term, then a number of engineering related jobs including some in Head Office and a senior job responsible for all retail marketing in Western Canada (from the BC Coast to the Ontario border. I retired from Shell (I had enough travel and moving my family. Then I joined Professional Engineers Ontario where I was for 12 years, ten of which were as Executive Director.I remarried in 1991 to Margaret. We travel a great deal.In addition I am now a professional artist with many exhibitions and professional qualifications under my belt...I work in my studio every day. Margaret and I live much of our time on Amherst Island (in Lake Ontario, 22 km west of Kingston) and have a small condo in Toronto... That's the short version of my life and activities. I am 83 years of age. If you care to, you can share these notes with our classmates. Warmest regards to all......Peter Large.
